Nerello Mascalese is an indigenous red grape variety primarily grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy. Renowned for its remarkable elegance and complexity, the grape yields wines with a pale to medium ruby hue, reminiscent in style of Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo. The aromatic profile often features fragrant notes of wild cherry, raspberry, dried roses, and hints of Mediterranean herbs, layered with subtle smoky and mineral undertones attributed to the volcanic soils.
On the palate, Nerello Mascalese typically offers medium body, vibrant acidity, and refined tannins, creating a harmonious and age-worthy structure. Flavours mirror the nose, with red berries, spice, earthy nuances, and occasionally a touch of black tea or liquorice.
While the primary region is Etna DOC in Sicily, limited plantings can also be found in other parts of Southern Italy. Nerello Mascalese is most commonly crafted as a single-varietal wine or blended with Nerello Cappuccio, producing both still reds and elegant rosés.
It pairs exceptionally well with grilled lamb, roast poultry, mushroom risotto, and aubergine-based dishes, as well as mature cheeses, accentuating its savoury and mineral-driven qualities.
