Santa Tresa’s 2020 Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOC is a distinguished red wine that captures the essence of southeastern Sicily. Predominantly composed of Nero d’Avola and Frappato, the blend epitomises the DOC’s unique character. The Nero d’Avola brings fullness and depth, exhibiting notes of dark cherry and plum, while the Frappato supplies vibrant freshness and subtle floral nuances. This careful vinification approach sees stainless steel preserving vibrant fruit with little oak influence, allowing a pure expression of varietal character. 2020 was a year marked by balanced ripening, producing wines of generous fruitiness with well-integrated acidity and rounded tannins.
Sicily, and specifically the area around Vittoria, has a rich viticultural heritage. The Mediterranean climate here offers hot, dry summers tempered by sea breezes, ensuring the grapes achieve optimum maturity without losing essential acidity. The soils are predominantly red sandy clay over limestone, which drains well and encourages vines to root deeply, concentrating flavours. The Cerasuolo di Vittoria appellation, Sicily’s only DOCG, is renowned for producing reds of elegance and freshness, a true reflection of the region’s sun-soaked lands and centuries-old winemaking tradition.
The supple structure and red-fruited vibrancy of this wine make it a versatile companion at the table. It pairs beautifully with Sicilian classics such as caponata and aubergine parmigiana, or a rich pasta alla Norma. Its medium body also complements grilled poultry, tuna or swordfish steaks, and lighter lamb dishes seasoned with Mediterranean herbs. Mature cheeses such as Pecorino Siciliano would also highlight the wine’s delicate fruit.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine briefly to unveil its aromatic complexity. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, ideally between 16-18°C. In this range, you’ll appreciate both the lively freshness of Frappato and the ripe depth of Nero d’Avola, ensuring a balanced and memorable tasting experience.
