Bruno Giacosa’s Barolo “Falletto Vigna Le Rocche Riserva” 2004 is a wine of remarkable pedigree and distinction, demonstrating the very essence of Nebbiolo from the famed Piedmont region of northern Italy. Crafted from the exceptional Vigna Le Rocche plot within the Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this Riserva is only produced in outstanding vintages. In 2004, the conditions were near-ideal, yielding a wine of impeccable balance and longevity. The long maturation—both in large Slavonian oak casks and subsequently in bottle—allows the Nebbiolo grape to unfold its full aromatic complexity: delicate notes of dried rose petals, tar, black cherries, mushrooms and subtle truffle are joined by refined hints of liquorice and tobacco. The palate is structured and deeply flavoured, with ample yet velvety tannins and a persistent, noble finish.
The Barolo DOC appellation is situated in the heart of the Langhe hills in Piedmont, an area with a winemaking tradition dating back centuries. The region enjoys a unique mesoclimate, cooled by Alpine breezes and warmed by the southern sun, with marl and clay-limestone soils that are perfect for bringing out the refinement and aromatic depth of Nebbiolo. The area’s patchwork of vineyards, often compared to Burgundy for its respect for terroir, produces some of Italy’s most ageworthy and nuanced reds. Barolo itself is intrinsically linked to history and gastronomy—once known as the “wine of kings, king of wines.”
To accompany such an elegant and powerful Barolo, opt for equally substantial dishes. Classic Piemonte pairings include braised beef cheek in Barolo, tajarin pasta with white truffles, or slowly-cooked ossobuco. Rich meat stews, roasted game or even mature hard cheeses like Castelmagno will also complement the wine’s tannic structure and aromatic depth.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for several hours before serving to allow it to express its full array of aromas. Serve at a temperature of 17-18°C. This wine is now beautifully mature yet still possesses many years of evolution ahead for those who value tertiary complexity.
