Roagna’s Barbaresco Gallina 2015 is a stunning expression of both the vintage and the Gallina cru, one of Barbaresco’s most prized vineyards. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, this wine hails from old vines in the Gallina vineyard, known for its unique south-facing slopes and calcareous marl soils. The 2015 vintage benefited from warm, dry conditions, resulting in concentrated fruit and ripe tannins. True to Roagna’s traditional approach, fermentation was conducted with indigenous yeasts, followed by an extended maceration. Ageing took place in large old oak casks, preserving the grape’s purity and the terroir’s signature while allowing for subtle maturation.
Barbaresco is one of the jewels of Piedmont, in north-western Italy. The region experiences a continental climate moderated by the proximity of the Tanaro river, with warm summers and cold winters that help Nebbiolo reach its aromatic potential while maintaining acidity. The soils in Gallina, a sub-zone within Neive, are rich in clay and limestone, imparting remarkable elegance and persistency to the wines. Barbaresco’s history is intertwined with noble families and centuries of winemaking tradition, and Roagna is a revered name, noted for its commitment to low yields, organic practices, and minimal intervention.
The refined structure and aromatic complexity of this Barbaresco make it a versatile partner at the table. Traditional northern Italian dishes such as veal with tuna sauce (vitello tonnato), tajarin al tartufo (egg yolk pasta with truffles), and braised beef in Barbaresco sauce highlight its depth. It also complements wild mushroom risotto, game birds, and aged cheeses such as Castelmagno or Toma. If you are seeking a regional experience, try pairing it with slow-cooked rabbit in local herbs.
For best enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow its bouquet to open. Serve in large Burgundy-style glasses at 16-18°C. This Barbaresco can age gracefully for several more years, but is already displaying its hallmark balance and finesse.
