Viniou Reviews

Roagna’s Barbaresco Faset 2017 is an exquisite expression of Nebbiolo from one of the most revered terroirs in the Piedmont region of Italy. Crafted exclusively from the Faset cru in Barbaresco, this wine showcases the hallmark elements of Nebbiolo: a clear garnet hue, complex aromatics, and refined tannic structure. The 2017 vintage benefitted from a warm season, lending the wine an accessible richness while maintaining the delicate floral and mineral qualities that Roagna is known for. Traditional vinification methods are used, with extended maceration and ageing in large old oak casks, promoting purity and a subtle integration of wood influence. This results in a wine that balances power and elegance, with layers of rose petal, dried cherry, liquorice, spice, and a distinct earthiness.

Barbaresco hails from the heart of the Langhe, in Piedmont, northwest Italy—a region celebrated for its noble reds and long viticultural history. The soils here are primarily limestone mixed with clay and sandy veins, imparting finesse and lift to the Nebbiolo grape. The rolling hills benefit from Alpine influences, creating a unique microclimate that tempers the Mediterranean warmth, ensuring a long, slow ripening for optimal aromatic development. Barbaresco itself, while stylistically less robust than nearby Barolo, tends to be more perfumed and approachable in its youth but equally capable of considerable ageing.

This Barbaresco partners beautifully with dishes that mirror its complexity and structure. Traditional Piedmontese fare such as tajarin with butter and sage, risotto with porcini mushrooms, or braised veal (brasato al Barbaresco) would highlight the wine’s fragrance and depth. Mature cheeses like Castelmagno or Taleggio also pair seamlessly, as do autumnal roasted game birds or wild mushroom dishes.

For optimal enjoyment, decant this Barbaresco at least an hour before serving and present it at a temperature of 16-18°C. This will allow the full spectrum of aromas to emerge and the tannins to soften elegantly on the palate. This vintage is drinking well now, though further cellaring will undoubtedly reward with added nuance and maturity.
