Viniou Reviews

Roagna's Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Vigne 2011 is a wine of remarkable pedigree, hailing from one of Piemonte's most prestigious terroirs. This cuvée is composed entirely of the Nebbiolo grape, sourced from the old vines ("Vecchie Vigne") within the Asili vineyard, a parcel renowned for its finesse and longevity. The 2011 vintage benefited from a warm growing season that fostered optimal ripeness, while Roagna's traditional approach to vinification – including lengthy macerations and maturation in large neutral casks – allows the purest expression of site and varietal. In the glass, expect a wine of striking complexity, with layers of red cherry, rose petal, wild herbs, and an earthy truffle undertone, all supported by Nebbiolo’s signature tannic backbone and vibrant acidity.

The Barbaresco region, part of Piemonte in north-west Italy, is famous for its rolling hills and calcareous marl soils, which impart elegance and aromatic lift to Nebbiolo wines. The continental climate, with marked differences between day and night temperatures—especially during late summer—allows grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness while retaining freshness. Historically, Barbaresco is often regarded as the feminine counterpart to Barolo, offering more immediate approachability without sacrificing complexity or ageing potential. The Asili vineyard itself is a grand cru site by local standards, with a south-western exposure that moderates the vines and produces wines of both perfume and power.

When considering food pairings, this Barbaresco is suited to the refined yet hearty fare of Piemonte. Classic local dishes such as tajarin al tartufo (egg-rich pasta with truffle), brasato al Barolo (wine-braised beef), and agnolotti del plin (stuffed pasta with veal and pork) will resonate with the wine’s structure and aromatics. The 2011 vintage's ripeness also makes it an excellent companion for wild mushroom risotto or aged cheeses like Castelmagno.

For optimal enjoyment, pour this wine at 16-18°C, ideally after decanting for a couple of hours to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to open fully. This is a wine of depth and subtlety, ready to drink now with proper aeration, but still capable of graceful evolution over the coming decade.
