Viniou Reviews

Le Morette’s Lugana Cuvée Mandolara 2023 is a refined white wine from Lombardy in northern Italy, crafted exclusively from the Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana) grape variety. The 2023 vintage features grapes harvested at just the right moment to preserve freshness and delicate aromatics, then vinified in stainless steel to emphasise fruit purity and minerality. The result is a crisp, elegantly dry wine showcasing pale straw yellow tones, lively acidity and signature aromas of white peach, fresh citrus, blossom, and subtle hints of almond. On the palate, you can anticipate a vibrant structure with a silky texture, leading to an appetisingly clean and mineral-driven finish.

The Lugana appellation straddles the southern shores of Lake Garda, a unique terroir shaped by its proximity to the water, which tempers extreme heat while maintaining a mild microclimate. The mineral-rich clay soils, deposited by ancient glaciers, are particularly well-suited to Turbiana, resulting in wines that capture both aromatic elegance and saline complexity. Although part of Lombardy, the region sits close to the Veneto border and has a rich winemaking history dating back to the Roman era. The area’s cool nights and abundant sunlight optimise the ripening process, lending balance and finesse to its wines.

Lugana’s refreshing vibrance and subtle complexity make it a fine partner for a variety of dishes. It excels with freshwater fish, shellfish and crustaceans—try it alongside Lake Garda’s traditional grilled whitefish, steamed prawns, or a delicate risotto with asparagus. Its zesty acidity cuts through rich cheeses or northern Italian antipasti. For a classic regional pairing, serve it with perch fillets sautéed with butter and sage (“filetti di persico al burro e salvia”).

To fully appreciate Le Morette Cuvée Mandolara’s aromatic subtleties and crispness, serve chilled at 8-10°C. Enjoy it young to capture its vitality, but a year or two of ageing can also reveal more depth. Pour into medium-sized glasses to enhance both its bouquet and freshness.
