Feudi di San Gregorio’s Taurasi 2016 is a distinguished red from Italy’s Campania region, generally crafted predominantly from the Aglianico grape, though precise blend details may vary slightly. In its youth, Taurasi often reveals an intense bouquet of dark cherries, blackberries and violets, subtly entwined with notes of leather, tobacco, and sweet spices that evolve with age. The 2016 vintage is likely to offer a structured yet elegant palate, with robust tannins, a vivid acidity, and remarkable depth, promising graceful ageing potential. The traditional vinification process tends to employ lengthy maceration and a period of oak ageing, enhancing the complexity, texture, and aromatic nuance of the wine.
Taurasi is considered the flagship appellation of Campania, located in the hills around Avellino, in the province of Irpinia. Here, vineyards rise up to five hundred metres above sea level, benefiting from a continental climate with marked diurnal temperature shifts, which aids in achieving wines of freshness and longevity. The volcanic soils, rich in minerals and well-draining, impart a distinct minerality and vibrancy that have earned Aglianico the moniker “the Barolo of the South”. The tradition of winemaking in the area dates back to Roman times, and the region’s commitment to quality has produced some of Italy’s most ageworthy reds.
With its full body and firm tannins, Taurasi pairs effortlessly with hearty fare. Classic local matches include slow-cooked Neapolitan ragù, grilled lamb, or braised beef in red wine sauce. It also stands up beautifully to aged cheeses such as Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano, and complements mushroom or truffle-based dishes.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for an hour before serving to allow the aromas to express themselves fully. Serve at 16-18°C to highlight both the fruit intensity and the subtle, savoury undertones. This Taurasi will reward patient cellaring, but already promises a rich and complex tasting experience.
