Di Gualtieri - Montemiletto Taurasi DOC 2017 is a distinctive red wine from Campania, crafted from the noble Aglianico grape, often referred to as the “Barolo of the South.” The 2017 vintage benefits from a rather warm and dry season, encouraging deep ripeness while retaining the grape’s powerful structure. This cuvée, named Nero Né, is produced with attentive traditional vinification: after hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo a lengthy maceration and are typically matured for several years in large Slavonian oak casks, followed by bottle ageing, in accordance with Taurasi DOC regulations. The result is a deeply coloured wine, offering complex aromas of black cherry, plum, tobacco, leather, spices, and a subtle minerality, underpinned by firm, yet civilised tannins and a long, harmonious finish.
The Campania region enjoys a rich viticultural history dating back to Greek and Roman times. Taurasi, situated in the province of Avellino, is characterised by its hilly landscapes and volcanic soils, bestowing an unmistakable mineral signature to the wines. The continental microclimate, with significant diurnal temperature fluctuations, allows Aglianico to ripen slowly, developing impressive aromatic complexity and retaining robust freshness. The area’s volcanic subsoils, rich in ash, pumice and clay, contribute to the intense structure and longevity typical of Taurasi wines, making them some of southern Italy’s most age-worthy reds.
Pair this Taurasi with hearty and flavourful dishes, as its structure and acidity complement rich meats and robust flavours. Traditional regional pairings include braised veal shank (ossobuco), agnello alla cacciatora (hunter-style lamb), or the classic local ragù Napoletano served with paccheri pasta. It also stands beautifully with matured cheeses such as Pecorino or aged Caciocavallo.
For optimal appreciation, decant the wine an hour before serving to soften the tannins and release its aromatic complexity. Serve at 16-18°C to allow its bouquet and depth to flourish. This wine has notable ageing potential, so you may also consider cellaring a few bottles for future enjoyment.
