Aglianico del Taburno, especially from Cantina Manzini’s 2024 vintage, is a striking example of a southern Italian red with both depth and elegance. Crafted from the Aglianico grape, often regarded as the “Barolo of the South” for its capacity to age and develop complexity, this wine typically displays a deep ruby hue with garnet reflections as it matures. The 2024 vintage is expected to be youthful yet promising, expressing vibrant notes of black cherry, plum, violet, and hints of subtle spices and earthiness. The winemaking process for Aglianico del Taburno tends to favour traditional techniques: fermentation in stainless steel to retain freshness, followed by maturation in large oak barrels to soften the firm tannins that are characteristic of Aglianico, allowing subtle tertiary notes to emerge with time.
The Campania region, nestled in southern Italy’s volcanic terrain, provides an exceptional environment for the Aglianico grape. The soils around the Taburno massif are predominantly volcanic, rich in minerals, contributing both to the wine’s structure and its elegant acidity. The Mediterranean climate, with hot summers tempered by mountain breezes and significant diurnal temperature shifts, aids in developing aromatic complexity and ensuring a balanced ripening. Campania’s wine history dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, and Aglianico’s origins here reflect a centuries-old tradition of producing wines with remarkable longevity and finesse.
For pairing, Aglianico del Taburno’s robust structure and lively acidity suit richly flavoured dishes. Consider classic Neapolitan cuisine such as slow-cooked beef ragù, braised lamb with rosemary, or aubergine parmigiana. Charcuterie, aged cheeses like Pecorino or Provolone, and wild mushroom risotto are also excellent companions, emphasising the wine’s savoury undertones.
To enjoy the full spectrum of aromas and soften the youthful tannins, decant the wine for at least an hour before serving. Serve at 16-18°C to allow both the fruit and the earthy characters to express themselves clearly. As this is a young vintage, it will reward some cellaring, but can already be appreciated with hearty meals and good company.
