Viniou Reviews

Grifalco's Cuvée Gricos is a striking example of the Aglianico del Vulture DOC, an appellation rooted in the volcanic terroirs of Basilicata in southern Italy. Produced from the noble Aglianico grape, often referred to as the “Barolo of the South”, this red shows remarkable character even as a non-vintage cuvée. The grapes are predominantly grown on slopes at the base of the extinct volcano Monte Vulture. The unique volcanic soils impart a distinctive minerality and complexity, while the careful vinification process preserves both the intensity of fruit and the natural acidity of the variety. Grifalco is known for their delicate approach in the cellar, focusing on freshness and a well-structured palate, making this wine approachable in its youth yet capable of maintaining elegance with a few years of cellaring.

The Basilicata region, particularly the Vulture area, boasts a temperate continental climate, influenced by altitude and cooling breezes from nearby mountains. The volcanic soils are rich in minerals, offering excellent drainage and nurturing healthy, expressive vines. Vineyards here often enjoy long growing seasons, allowing the Aglianico grape to develop deeply coloured skins and complex phenolic content. While this area is one of Italy’s lesser-known winegrowing regions, it has a rich history of viticulture dating back to the Greeks and Romans, and today it is increasingly celebrated for producing bold, age-worthy reds.

Aglianico del Vulture’s structure, notable acidity, and savoury tannins make it a wonderful partner for hearty foods. Traditional Basilicata cuisine provides excellent inspiration: think of slow-cooked lamb with rosemary and garlic, wild boar ragù over homemade pasta, or sausage stews with earthy lentils. The wine’s robust profile also stands up beautifully to grilled steaks, aged cheeses such as Pecorino, and rustic mushroom dishes. For an authentic pairing, try it with "peperoni cruschi", the region’s famous sweet dried peppers.

For optimal enjoyment, serve Grifalco Cuvée Gricos at 16-18°C. Decanting for about thirty minutes will help open its aromatic complexity and soften its tannic structure, allowing its vibrant fruit, subtle spice, and underlying minerality to truly shine.
