Antinori’s Tignanello 2017 is an iconic red wine that exemplifies both the tradition and innovation of Tuscan winemaking. This renowned cuvée blends predominantly Sangiovese with a judicious portion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, giving it structure and complexity. The 2017 vintage was shaped by a warm and relatively dry growing season, resulting in grapes of impressive concentration and maturity. Thirty percent new French and Hungarian oak barrels are typically used for the maturation, lending polished tannins and subtle notes of spice to the finished wine. Tignanello expresses aromas of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, and plum, interwoven with hints of tobacco, leather, and Mediterranean herbs, carrying through to a deep, persistent palate with remarkable balance and finesse.
Hailing from the heart of Tuscany, Tignanello is produced in the gently rolling hills between the Greve and Pesa rivers, on soils rich in limestone and marl. This terroir is especially prized for its ability to yield wines of great elegance and longevity. The region benefits from a warm Mediterranean climate, tempered by cool nights, which helps preserve acidity and aromatic complexity in the grapes. Marchesi Antinori, established in 1385, has been instrumental in elevating Tuscan wines to global prominence; the creation of Tignanello in the 1970s marked a key innovation for the so-called “Super Tuscan” movement, challenging traditional appellation rules and raising the quality bar for wines of the region.
Tignanello’s layered profile and supple tannins call for refined food pairings. It is a wonderful match with classic Tuscan cuisine: Florentine steak (Bistecca alla Fiorentina), wild boar ragù with pappardelle, roast lamb with herbs, or rich dishes featuring porcini mushrooms and truffles. It also complements aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano and hard Parmesan. For international pairings, opt for grilled ribeye or slow-cooked beef cheeks.
For optimal enjoyment, serve Tignanello 2017 at 16-18°C after allowing it to breathe or decanting for at least an hour. This will highlight its aromatic complexity and allow its structure to unfold beautifully in the glass.
