Tenuta Guado al Tasso’s Cuvée Matarocchio 2016 is a fine example of a Bolgheri DOC red that perfectly encapsulates the elegance and potential of coastal Tuscany. Matarocchio is crafted predominantly from Cabernet Franc, a grape that truly shines in the Bolgheri terroir, particularly in outstanding vintages such as 2016. The vineyard, situated on gently sloping alluvial plains just a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea, benefits from abundant sunlight, maritime breezes and a unique mixture of clay and sandy soils. Vinification at Tenuta Guado al Tasso is meticulous: grapes are harvested by hand, sorted with care, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats before ageing for over a year in French oak barriques, adding layers of complexity and refined tannins.
Bolgheri’s rise to international fame is quite recent in terms of Italian wine history. Once known mainly for humble white wines, the region’s profile changed dramatically in the late 20th century with the emergence of so-called “Super Tuscans” – blends inspired by Bordeaux but with a distinct Tuscan flair. The region enjoys a warm, moderating maritime climate ideal for cultivating Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The soils here are well-drained, varied and lend finesse to the wines, alongside characteristic Mediterranean herbal and savoury notes.
Matarocchio 2016 is a wine of depth and power, with aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, tobacco and subtle spice. On the palate it offers ripe, dark fruit, integrated oak, and a persistent minerality. For food pairings, consider hearty, flavourful dishes such as slow-cooked beef, roasted lamb with rosemary, or classic wild boar ragù. Local Tuscan fare like pappardelle al cinghiale or bistecca alla fiorentina will beautifully complement its structure and aromatic complexity.
This wine is best enjoyed after decanting, served at 16-18°C. Given its concentration and structure, it will continue to develop gracefully in bottle for the next decade or more.
