Poggio al Tesoro’s Sondraia 2019 is an exemplary Bolgheri DOC red, hailing from one of Tuscany’s most exciting coastal appellations. This sophisticated blend, characteristic of the Super Tuscan style, typically brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, producing a wine of impressive structure and elegance. 2019 was a notably balanced vintage in Bolgheri, marked by moderate temperatures and optimal ripening conditions, thus allowing each variety to shine through in harmony. Careful vinification – usually involving temperature-controlled fermentation and gentle extraction, followed by significant maturation in French oak barriques – gives Sondraia its deep colour, layered bouquet of dark berries, spice, tobacco and an intriguing savoury note, culminating in a velvety, persistent finish.

Bolgheri, situated in western Tuscany near the Tyrrhenian Sea, enjoys a warm, maritime climate with cooling sea breezes that help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness in the grapes. The area is notable for its alluvial soils, rich in clay, sand and pebbles, creating ideal drainage conditions. Once a relatively obscure region, Bolgheri rose to international acclaim in recent decades, spearheaded by the emergence of “Super Tuscan” wines – innovative blends that challenge traditional Tuscan norms by incorporating Bordeaux varietals.

With its power and elegance, Sondraia 2019 pairs beautifully with robust, flavourful dishes. Traditional Tuscan fare such as bistecca alla fiorentina – a chargrilled T-bone steak – or wild boar ragù over pappardelle is a natural fit. Further afield, try it alongside roast lamb with Mediterranean herbs, venison with juniper, or hard cheeses like aged pecorino. The wine’s ripe tannins and freshness can also complement more contemporary pairings such as seared duck breast with berry sauces or a rich vegetarian mushroom risotto.

For optimal enjoyment, decant Sondraia about an hour before serving to allow the complex aromas to unfurl. The ideal service temperature is between 16 and 18°C, which will allow the wine’s structure and depth to be fully appreciated without overpowering the palate.
