Luigi Righetti’s Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Capitel De Roari 2020 is a rich and intense red wine originating from the heart of the Veneto region in north-eastern Italy. Crafted primarily from indigenous grape varieties such as Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, this Amarone is made using the traditional appassimento method, where harvested grapes are left to dry on racks for several months, concentrating their sugars and flavours. The 2020 vintage expresses the hallmark depth and power of Amarone: expect a bouquet of dark cherries, dried plums, cocoa and sweet spices, with a subtle hint of tobacco and balsamic undertones. On the palate, it is full-bodied with velvety tannins, well-integrated alcohol, and a long, warming finish.
The Valpolicella region enjoys a privileged position between Lake Garda and the Lessini Mountains, benefiting from a temperate climate with good ventilation and significant diurnal temperature variation. The soils are largely calcareous and clay-based, providing excellent drainage and a mineral complexity that is reflected in the wines. Viticulture here dates back to Roman times and Amarone is the region’s flagship style, celebrated for its opulence and ageing potential. Over the years, producers such as Luigi Righetti have upheld tradition while continuing to refine their winemaking techniques.
For food pairings, Amarone della Valpolicella excels alongside robust and flavourful dishes. Traditional partners include slow-cooked beef stew (pastissada de caval), braised lamb shanks, or aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano and Grana Padano. The wine’s ripe fruit and rich structure also complement mushroom risotto, venison or game birds, offering a harmonious balance to intense, savoury flavours.
To best appreciate the Capitel De Roari 2020, serve it after decanting for at least an hour at a temperature of 18-20°C. This will allow the complex aromas to unfurl and the palate to soften, delivering a truly rewarding tasting experience. Amarone is also a wine with excellent cellaring potential, should you wish to explore its evolution in your collection.
