Viniou Reviews

Le Miccine Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva is a non-vintage red wine hailing from the heart of Tuscany in Italy, specifically the esteemed Chianti Classico appellation. Crafted as a Riserva, it signifies careful selection and extended maturation, typically harmonising the emblematic Sangiovese grape with small additions of native or international varieties, depending on the producer's vision. Le Miccine, known for its fidelity to tradition and keen focus on terroir, usually opts for organic and sustainable practices, even in the absence of formal certification here. The Riserva style ensures a longer ageing, often in a mix of large and small oak barrels, lending additional structure, complexity, and integrated tannins while allowing vibrant red cherry, wild berry, dried herbs, and a hint of spice to shine through.

The Chianti Classico zone, nestled between Florence and Siena, is revered for its undulating hills, ancient soils, and moderate continental climate. The vineyards benefit from clay-limestone soils—locally termed 'galestro' and 'alberese'—imparting a distinct minerality, freshness, and elegance to the wines. The region's long winemaking history, stretching back to at least the Middle Ages, has established its reputation for robust yet refined reds that encapsulate the Tuscan spirit. The Chianti Classico DOCG, with its iconic black rooster seal, represents the pinnacle of the area, delivering wines marked by balance, finesse, and age-worthy potential.

This expressive Riserva pairs beautifully with traditional Tuscan cuisine. Consider serving it with bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine T-bone steak), wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or a rustic mushroom risotto. The wine's freshness and tannic backbone also make it an excellent companion to herb-roasted lamb, aged pecorino, and tomato-based dishes which benefit from its lively acidity and subtle earthiness.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for about an hour before serving. Serve at 16-18°C to reveal its full aromatic bouquet and allow the tannins to soften, expressing both the vibrant fruit and savoury notes typical of Chianti Classico Riserva.
