The 2018 Fontodi Chianti Classico is an expressive red wine from the heart of Tuscany, showcasing the Sangiovese grape in its purest form. This wine hails from the renowned commune of Panzano within the Chianti Classico appellation, where Fontodi has established itself as a leading organic producer. The 2018 vintage benefited from balanced weather conditions, allowing optimal ripening of the grapes. The wine is crafted using traditional methods, with fermentation in stainless steel followed by maturation in French oak barrels, which brings structure and subtle spice without overpowering the bright fruit profile of Sangiovese. In the glass, expect vibrant aromas of sour cherry, wild herbs, violet and a hint of tobacco, supported by refined tannins and the lively acidity characteristic of Chianti Classico.
Tuscany, and particularly the Chianti Classico zone, is famed for its undulating hills, warm Mediterranean climate and galestro soils – a rocky mix rich in limestone and schist that imparts minerality and elegance to the wines. The region’s history is deeply entwined with Sangiovese, making it a benchmark for this noble variety. Winemaking here dates back to Etruscan times, and the official Chianti Classico designation is strictly controlled to uphold quality, with recognition of the “Gallo Nero” black rooster symbol as a mark of authenticity.
This wine’s structure and fresh acidity make it highly versatile at the table. Traditional Tuscan cuisine, such as bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak), wild boar ragù with pappardelle or roast lamb with rosemary, pairs beautifully with the Fontodi Chianti Classico. The wine’s natural affinity for tomato-based dishes also makes it a classic companion for slow-cooked tomato sauces, hearty vegetable stews, or aged Pecorino cheese.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for an hour before serving to allow its aromas to fully open. Serve at 16-18°C to appreciate its freshness and complexity, and enjoy within the next decade to experience its evolution in the bottle.
