Fontodi’s 2019 Chianti Classico is an exemplary expression of the Sangiovese grape, the lifeblood of Tuscany. This vintage captures the essence of its terroir, with grapes sourced from organically farmed vineyards nestled in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone, particularly in the renowned Conca d’Oro valley of Panzano. The estate, known for its meticulous vinification, ferments the Sangiovese in stainless steel before ageing it in a mix of French oak barriques and traditional casks, resulting in a refined yet vibrant wine. The 2019 vintage, benefitting from a balanced growing season marked by warm days and cool nights, offers remarkable freshness, vivid red cherry fruit, subtle floral notes, and a backdrop of earthy spice infused with a touch of tobacco. The tannins are polished and the acidity taut, ensuring both immediate pleasure and potential for further ageing.
Chianti Classico is the historic heartland of Chianti, an area celebrated for wine production since the 13th century. The region is defined by its undulating hills with altitudes between 250 and 600 metres, benefitting from a continental climate and excellent diurnal temperature variation. Soils here are primarily galestro (a crumbly schist) and alberese (limestone), which impart minerality, finesse, and structure to the wines. The combination of these natural elements, coupled with centuries-old wine traditions, establishes Chianti Classico as one of Italy’s most esteemed wine regions.
This Chianti Classico pairs beautifully with a range of Tuscan and Italian fare. Traditional options such as bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak), wild boar ragù, or pappardelle with porcini mushrooms highlight the wine’s structure and savoury depth. It is equally suited to roast lamb, grilled vegetables, or aged Pecorino cheese. The wine’s acidity and freshness also complement tomato-based dishes and herb-infused Mediterranean cuisine.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour prior to serving, which will help to open up the aromatics and soften the tannins. Serve at 16-18°C; this allows the wine to express its full aromatic complexity and precision on the palate.
