Produttori del Barbaresco’s Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva 2017 is an exceptional example of one of the Piedmont region's most celebrated crus. Made entirely from Nebbiolo, this single-vineyard cuvée hails from the renowned Rabajà plot, famous for yielding structured and age-worthy wines of profound complexity. The 2017 vintage, sculpted by a relatively warm growing season with judicious harvest management, offers both opulence and precision. It undergoes traditional vinification: fermentation in stainless steel followed by an extended period of ageing in large oak casks. This process allows Nebbiolo's tannic strength and lofty aromatics to develop gracefully. Deep garnet in colour, the wine presents enticing aromas of dried cherries, violet, rose petal, truffle and a whiff of tar, evolving with savoury, balsamic, and liquorice notes as it matures.
The Barbaresco DOCG is rooted in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, a region steeped in winemaking heritage. The area’s signature rolling hills, rich in calcareous clay and limestone, are perfectly suited to Nebbiolo. Rabajà is one of Barbaresco’s most revered vineyards, owing its prestige to a prime south-west aspect and excellent drainage, which together foster slow, even grape ripening. The climate is continental with hot summers and chilly winters, moderated by cool breezes and morning mists from the nearby Tanaro river—an essential factor in preserving Nebbiolo’s aromatic integrity. This distinctive combination of terroir, microclimate and history imparts a powerful yet elegant character to the resulting wines.
Pairing this Barbaresco with food calls for dishes of substance and refinement. Regional Piedmontese fare is a natural companion: think braised veal cheek, tajarin pasta with white truffle, or slow-cooked beef brasato al Barolo. The wine’s firm tannins and vibrant acidity also make it a superb partner for wild mushroom risotto, roast game, or aged cheeses such as Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano.
For optimal enjoyment, decant this Barbaresco at least one hour before serving, allowing its aromatic bouquet to unfurl. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C. In its youth, the wine will impress with vigour and freshness, but it promises even greater rewards after 5-10 years of cellar ageing, as its nuances deepen and its tannins become more polished.
