The 2014 Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva by Produttori del Barbaresco is an outstanding expression of Nebbiolo from one of the region’s most esteemed single vineyards. The wine displays a vibrant garnet colour, characteristic of Nebbiolo, with complex aromatics of wild cherry, rose petal, dried herbs, and subtle earthy notes. This vintage, marked by a cool and rainy growing season, brought out a beautiful freshness and refined structure, enhancing the wine’s signature energy and longevity. The Rabajà vineyard is known for its calcareous clay soils and south-western exposure, which impart both power and elegance to the wine. Aged traditionally in large botti, the wine preserves its purity of fruit and tannic firmness while retaining a striking finesse on the palate.
Barbaresco is situated in the Piedmont region of north-western Italy, an area with a storied viticultural heritage dating back centuries. The region benefits from a continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters, and the influence of the Tanaro River contributes to an ideal microclimate for Nebbiolo. The rolling Langhe hills feature diverse soils that accentuate the subtle differences between crus. Barbaresco itself is slightly warmer than neighbouring Barolo, resulting in wines that are more approachable in youth yet capable of graceful ageing. The Rabajà cru is especially revered for producing structured, aromatic Nebbiolos with notable ageing potential.
A Barbaresco of this pedigree shines alongside refined Piedmontese dishes. Traditional pairings include slow-braised veal cheek, wild mushroom risotto, truffle-infused tajarin pasta, or agnolotti del plin with sage butter. The wine’s firm tannins and bright acidity also make it an excellent partner for roast game, duck breast, or mature cheeses like Castelmagno.
For optimal enjoyment, decanting the Rabajà Riserva for at least two hours is recommended to allow the aromatics to open fully. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C. This careful approach will highlight its complexity, structure, and the delicate floral notes that set Rabajà Barbaresco apart.
