Viniou Reviews

Wittmann’s 2020 Morstein Riesling Grosses Gewächs (GG) is a striking example of Rheinhessen’s vinous renaissance. Produced from old vines planted in the Morstein vineyard, this wine is a pure varietal Riesling crafted using organic and biodynamic practices, demonstrating both meticulous vineyard management and a deep respect for the local terroir. The Morstein vineyard is famed for its limestone-rich soils, contributing finesse, tension, and remarkable ageing potential to the wine. Fermentation is traditionally carried out with indigenous yeasts in large oak casks, resulting in a dry, focused Riesling that is both expressive and complex. The 2020 vintage, marked by a relatively cool growing season, imparts crystalline acidity and vivid aromatics, featuring notes of citrus, green apple, white peach, and subtle herbal undertones, all underpinned by a signature mineral backbone.

Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest winegrowing region and has, in recent decades, transformed its reputation from volume to quality, with estates such as Wittmann leading the way. The region’s rolling hills are defined by varied soils, but limestone is especially prized in the western districts like Alzey, where it lends structure and elegance to wines. The climate benefits from the shelter provided by the Hunsrück and Taunus uplands, allowing for long ripening periods and optimal flavour development in Riesling. With a history of vine cultivation dating back to Roman times, Rheinhessen marries ancient tradition with a dynamic, modern approach.

A Riesling GG of this calibre pairs exquisitely with sophisticated yet subtly flavoured dishes. Try it with sautéed scallops, poached turbot, or charred white asparagus topped with hollandaise. Closer to home, it shines with classic German fare such as Zanderfilet mit Rieslingsauce (pike-perch in Riesling sauce), or even a rabbit terrine with fine herbs. The wine’s lively acidity and mineral drive also make it a superb match for lightly spiced Asian cuisine.

For optimal enjoyment, serve Wittmann Morstein Riesling GG at 10-12°C. A decantation of thirty minutes will allow its complexity to unfurl, and while it is captivating now, this wine will continue to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more.
