Dönnhoff’s Hermannshöhle Riesling 2020 is a remarkable expression of Nahe’s Grand Cru whites. The wine is crafted exclusively from Riesling, Germany’s emblematic grape, showcasing both the distinctive minerality of the iconic Hermannshöhle vineyard and the precise winemaking that characterises Dönnhoff. 2020 was a vintage marked by a cool start, moderate rainfall and a long, harmonious growing season, resulting in fruit of impressive balance and aromatic nuance. The vineyard itself, Hermannshöhle, is revered for its steep south-facing slopes and incredibly complex soils of grey slate, loess, and volcanic porphyry, which lend the wine its signature depth and elegance. Fermentation is conducted in stainless steel and traditional large oak casks, preserving the wine’s purity, crystal-clear fruit and refined texture.
The Nahe region, though small, stands among Germany’s most dynamic winelands. It bridges the Mosel and Rheinhessen, benefitting from sheltering forests and a mild climate with large diurnal temperature shifts. The soils here are particularly diverse, a mosaic of slate, quartzite, volcanic rock and alluvial deposits; Hermannshöhle is especially privileged, considered the Nahe’s most celebrated site since the 19th century. This diversity imbues the wines with extraordinary complexity, intensity and finesse, balancing pronounced acidity with expressive fruit and stony minerality.
The energy and sophistication of this dry Riesling make it a surprisingly versatile table companion. Its lively acidity and ripe citrus, peach and white blossom notes would complement classic German cuisine such as poached trout with fresh herbs (Forelle Müllerin), veal schnitzel or pork with light apple sauce. It is equally compelling with pan-seared scallops, Asian-inspired dishes with ginger or lemongrass, or even a goat’s cheese salad. For a regional touch, pair it with a slice of Nahe-style Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart).
To appreciate its purity and detail, serve the Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling 2020 well-chilled, ideally between 8 and 10°C. Decanting is not essential, but allowing the wine 20 minutes in the glass will help reveal its evolving aromas and crystalline minerality.
