Viniou Reviews

Clos de la Barthassade’s “Les Gravettes” 2022 from the Terrasses-du-Larzac AOC is a fine example of the dynamic red blends emerging from one of Languedoc’s most exciting appellations. Typically crafted from a harmonious blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, this wine mirrors the unique terroir of the region—where stony soils and cool night temperatures yield grapes brimming with freshness. The 2022 vintage stands out for its vibrancy, striking a balance between ripe black fruits, Mediterranean herbs, and a subtle minerality. Expect a medium to full-bodied palate with soft yet structured tannins, a lively acidity, and alluring notes of black cherry, plum, wild thyme, and a touch of liquorice. The vinification tends to favour gentle extraction and controlled ageing—often in a mix of vats and barrels—to preserve both fruit expression and finesse.

Terrasses-du-Larzac is one of the rising stars of the Languedoc region, situated northwest of Montpellier, where the cool breezes from the Larzac plateau meet the heat of the Mediterranean sun. This convergence, combined with rocky limestone and clay soils, gives wines of marked aromatic intensity and freshness. The area has a relatively recent AOC status, recognised for wines that combine southern richness with northern lift. Centuries of viticultural history, revitalised in recent decades by ambitious vignerons, have made Terrasses-du-Larzac a reference for quality and authenticity in the Languedoc.

“Les Gravettes” will shine alongside regional fare such as lamb shoulder with herbes de Provence, duck breast with figs, or a classic ratatouille. It pairs equally well with grilled beef, spiced couscous, or mature hard cheeses like Laguiole. For an adventurous touch, try it with Moroccan lamb tagine or roasted pheasant.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this red wine at 16-18°C after a brief carafe decantation to let its aromas unfold. It is approachable now but can benefit from another few years of cellar ageing for added complexity.
