Domaine Christian Moreau Père & Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2008 is a sublime expression of Chardonnay from one of Burgundy’s most esteemed terroirs. Les Clos is the largest and arguably most prestigious of Chablis’ seven Grand Cru vineyards, offering wines with exceptional depth and longevity. The 2008 vintage stands out for its remarkable balance and freshness, shaped by a relatively cool growing season. In the glass, the wine displays a pale golden hue, while the nose reveals layered aromas of white flowers, ripe citrus, flint, wet stone, and a lingering hint of hazelnut and honey. On the palate, there is a beautiful tension between mineral-driven acidity and creamy texture, with a persistent, saline finish that is the hallmark of outstanding Chablis. Meticulous vinification at Domaine Christian Moreau Père & Fils combines traditional methods—hand harvesting, gentle pressing, and ageing partly in oak barrels, partly in stainless steel—to preserve both the purity of fruit and the unique signature of the Les Clos parcel.
Situated in the northernmost part of Burgundy, Chablis enjoys a semi-continental climate, which brings cool winters and warm summers perfect for growing Chardonnay with crisp acidity. The real secret to Chablis lies in its soils: ancient Kimmeridgian limestone mixed with fossilised seashells, imparting the prized minerality and finesse to its wines. The history of vine growing here stretches back to Roman times, with the Grand Cru slopes reserved for the very best exposures offering optimal sunlight and drainage. Domaine Christian Moreau has a notable history within this region, recognised for their commitment to quality and their respect for the terroir.
Les Clos Grand Cru truly deserves food pairings that highlight its complexity and structure. Classic partners include fine seafood such as lobster in butter, scallops carpaccio, or Dover sole meunière. For a regional touch, serve it with Burgundy’s famed escargots in a garlicky parsley butter, or creamy chicken with morel mushrooms. Matured cheeses such as Comté or an aged Chaource also make an excellent match, their richness balanced by the wine’s tension and length.
This Chablis Grand Cru is best enjoyed at a serving temperature of 11-13°C. This allows the full spectrum of its aromas and texture to express themselves. To fully appreciate its complexity, open the bottle half an hour before drinking. While it shows beautifully now, it can also be cellared for several more years, gaining further complexity and depth.
