Benjamin Leroux’s Meursault Premier Cru “Cuvée La Pièce Sous le Bois” 2020 is a white Burgundy that exemplifies both precision and depth. Produced from Chardonnay grapes grown in a renowned Premier Cru site, this cuvée reflects the winemaker’s deft craftsmanship and the distinct personality of Meursault. The 2020 vintage—marked by favourable weather—yielded grapes with excellent maturity, imparting the wine with ripe fruit intensity while retaining vibrant acidity. Vinified with meticulous attention, the wine is typically aged in fine French oak barrels, which introduce subtle toasty and nutty nuances without overshadowing the natural character of the fruit.
The Côte de Beaune, and more specifically Meursault, is internationally celebrated for producing some of the finest expressions of Chardonnay. The terroir here is a mosaic of limestone and marl soils which, combined with a temperate continental climate, rewards the vines with both richness and finesse. Historically, Meursault wines are known for their aromatic complexity, ample texture, and a balance that sits between lusciousness and lively minerality. The “La Pièce Sous le Bois” vineyard lies in a particularly well-situated sector, benefitting from ideal slope, sun exposure, and drainage.
For food pairings, Meursault Premier Cru is a beautiful match for refined yet flavourful dishes. It will shine alongside roast poultry with a creamy morel sauce, pan-seared scallops, or lobster in beurre blanc. A regional favourite, poulet de Bresse à la crème, would be a stellar choice. The wine’s textured palate and fresh acidity also complement earthy mushrooms or a subtly truffled risotto.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this Meursault at 12-14°C in generous white wine glasses to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl. Decanting for thirty minutes can further reveal layers of hazelnut, stone fruit, and floral undertones. The wine will mature beautifully over the coming years, so consider cellaring a few bottles for future occasions.
