Viniou Reviews

The 2017 Meursault Premier Cru “Genevrières” from Domaine Boyer-Martenot is a wonderful expression of Chardonnay from one of Burgundy’s most celebrated villages. This wine comes from a prized Premier Cru parcel, renowned for its stony, clay-limestone soils that lend a distinctly mineral backbone to the wine. The 2017 vintage benefits from a relatively cool and balanced growing season, resulting in wines with both freshness and ripe fruit character. Vinification at Boyer-Martenot emphasises gentle pressing, fermentation in oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak to add dimension without overpowering), and patient maturation on the lees for added complexity and texture.

Meursault lies in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, an area synonomous with some of the world’s greatest white wines. The region is blessed with a temperate continental climate, with warm summers and cool, misty autumns – ideal for slow, steady grape maturation. The hillsides of Meursault, particularly the Genevrières cru, benefit from optimal sunlight exposure and mineral-rich, well-drained soils that imbue the Chardonnay with a unique aromatic complexity and signature richness. Historically, Meursault’s white wines have been revered since at least the 15th century, prized for their finesse and capacity for ageing.

This Meursault Genevrières offers a captivating nose, with notes of toasted hazelnut, ripe pear, white peach, subtle citrus, and a hint of honey, all lifted by a saline, smoky minerality. On the palate, it is broad-shouldered and creamy, yet cut through with vibrant acidity and lingering mineral tension.

For food pairings, this wine shines with classic Burgundian dishes such as pike quenelles with Nantua sauce, roast Bresse chicken with morels, or simply seared scallops. It also marries beautifully with creamy shellfish, lobster thermidor, or a fine poultry vol-au-vent.

Serve this Meursault at 11-13°C in a large-bowled glass to let its aromatic complexity unfold. Allowing the wine a few minutes of aeration before tasting will enhance your experience, revealing its full array of flavours and textures.
