Roger-Maufoux’s 2024 Mâcon-Villages is a classic example of white Burgundy crafted from 100% Chardonnay, the hallmark grape of this celebrated region. The vineyards in the Mâconnais, particularly those entitled to the Mâcon-Villages appellation, are prized for their limestone-rich soils and gentle south-facing slopes. The 2024 vintage benefits from a temperate, relatively warm growing season that allowed for slow, complete ripening, resulting in a wine with bright aromatics, balanced acidity and a pleasing minerality. Vinification here typically favours stainless steel rather than oak, preserving the purity and freshness of the Chardonnay fruit while accentuating the wine’s subtle floral notes and vibrant citrus and green apple character.
The Mâconnais, located just south of the famed Côte d'Or, occupies a unique place in Burgundy’s tapestry with its undulating landscapes, sun-drenched vineyards, and a history of wine production dating back to Roman times. This southern sub-region enjoys a slightly warmer and sunnier climate than northern Burgundy, which imparts a riper, friendlier style to its Chardonnays—less austere than their Chablis cousins, but still with the hallmark Burgundian nuance and precision. Its diversity of soils, dominated by limestone and clay, provides the wines with both elegance and mineral structure, hallmarks of the region's best bottles.
With its fresh, aromatic style, this Mâcon-Villages is a delightful partner to a variety of dishes. Classic pairings include delicately grilled white fish, roast chicken with tarragon, or a warm goat’s cheese salad—a nod to the regional dish, salade mâconnaise. It would also shine alongside shellfish or light vegetarian fare, where the lively acidity lifts the flavours. For an authentic Burgundian experience, pair it with a local cheese such as Charolais or a mild Sainte-Maure.
To appreciate its youthful freshness and aromatic profile, serve this wine well-chilled at 8-10°C. Open shortly before pouring to allow its aromas to blossom, and enjoy within the next two to three years for peak vibrancy and charm.
