Château Villars 2018 from the Fronsac AOC is an exemplary expression of the classic Bordeaux red blend. Typically crafted from predominantly Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, this cuvée showcases both the generosity and structure that characterise the region's finest wines. The 2018 vintage benefited from a warm, even growing season, allowing grapes to achieve full ripeness while maintaining freshness. In the glass, you can expect an intense ruby colour, with inviting aromas of ripe blackberries, cherries, subtle violet, and hints of cedar and spice from careful oak ageing. On the palate, the wine is well-structured with velvet-like tannins, offering layers of dark fruit, licorice, graphite, and a lingering mineral finish, a signature of Fronsac’s unique terroir.
Fronsac itself, nestled on the right bank of the Dordogne River just northwest of Libourne, boasts a long and distinguished history dating back to Roman times. The region is renowned for its rolling hills, known as "les côtes," which are composed mainly of clay and limestone soils. These mineral-rich soils, combined with excellent drainage and exposure, provide ideal conditions for Merlot to thrive, producing wines of depth and elegance. The local microclimate, tempered by river influences and moderated by Atlantic breezes, ensures a balance between ripeness and acidity, which is reflected in the structure and balance of the wines.
For a harmonious dining experience, pair Château Villars 2018 with classic French dishes such as duck confit, beef fillet with wild mushrooms, or a rich lamb stew. The wine’s supple tannins and generous fruit also complement regional cuisine, including cannelés de Bordeaux or entrecôte à la bordelaise. Mature cheeses such as aged Comté or Saint-Nectaire are excellent companions, as their complexity resonates beautifully with the wine’s depth.
When serving this Fronsac, decanting is recommended to release its aromatic complexity and soften the tannins. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C to fully appreciate its balance and elegance. The wine has good potential for cellaring, but is already delightful if enjoyed today with a suitable meal.
