Château Suduiraut, primarily renowned for its exceptional Sauternes, also produces a remarkable dry white in the form of its “Cuvée S de Suduiraut Blanc Sec” from the 2020 vintage. Crafted in Bordeaux under the regional Bordeaux appellation, this wine is defined by a classic blend, most likely dominated by Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, the pillars of great Bordeaux whites. The 2020 vintage benefitted from a growing season characterised by a warm spring and an early but protracted harvest, yielding grapes with excellent ripeness and aromatic concentration. The wine is vinified in conditions that favour purity and fresh expression, often with a proportion aged in oak to lend texture and complexity, resulting in a crisp, elegant and well-structured palate with vibrant notes of citrus, white-fleshed fruit and subtle nuttiness.
Bordeaux’s gravely soils, particularly in the southern part around Sauternes, are well-suited to both sweet and dry whites, offering excellent drainage but also the ability to impart a distinct mineral character to the wines. The maritime influence of the Atlantic Ocean brings humidity and cooling effects, promoting slow grape maturation and bright acidity. The region’s long-standing prestige in the wine world traces back centuries, and while celebrated globally for its reds and liquorous whites, Bordeaux is increasingly turning heads with the freshness and gastronomic versatility of its dry white wines like this cuvée.
The S de Suduiraut Blanc Sec is a fine companion to seafood—think seared scallops or grilled prawns—as well as delicately flavoured fish dishes such as lemon sole with beurre blanc. It’s also delightful with poultry in light sauces, goat cheese salads, or even local Bordeaux specialties like oysters from the nearby Arcachon Bay. Its subtle oak character and lively citrus make it equally engaging with mildly spiced Asian cuisine.
To best enjoy this wine, serve chilled at 10-12°C, allowing its aromatic complexity and delicate palate to unfold fully in the glass. Decanting is optional but a short aeration can open up its floral and mineral nuances. This bottle promises both immediate pleasure and the potential to evolve beautifully over a few years in the cellar.
