Château Bourgneuf 2022 reveals all the youthful vigour and classic structure of a fine Pomerol. Made primarily from Merlot, typical of the region, and complemented by a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, this red boasts deep ruby hues and an aromatic complexity aligned with its terroir. 2022 was a year marked by relatively warm, sunny conditions, resulting in concentrated, ripe fruit and polished tannins. On the nose, expect notes of black cherry, plum and a touch of violet, underpinned by subtle hints of earthy truffle and sweet spices, a reflection of careful ageing in French oak barrels. The palate is supple and elegant, revealing velvety tannins, lively acidity, and a lingering finish of dark fruits and mocha.
Pomerol sits on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, renowned for its unique mosaic of gravel, clay and sand soils, especially the prized blue clay that delivers Merlot of remarkable depth and sensuality. Though one of Bordeaux’s smaller and less ostentatious appellations, Pomerol’s history is interwoven with family estates and meticulous viticulture. The maritime climate, moderated by the vast Atlantic and neighbouring rivers, enables long, even ripening seasons, building complexity in the grapes while preserving their natural freshness. While its fame might pale alongside appellations like Margaux or Pauillac, Pomerol consistently produces some of Bordeaux’s most enchanting reds, appreciated for their approachability in youth and refined evolution with age.
This wine’s plush texture and rich fruit make it a superb partner to classic French dishes such as duck breast with cherry sauce, roasted lamb shoulder with herbs, or even a creamy mushroom risotto. For a regional experience, serve it with Bordelaise-style entrecôte or gamey confit de canard. The wine’s structure also matches well with earthy lentil stews or a selection of hard cheeses such as aged Comté.
To best appreciate Château Bourgneuf 2022, decant the wine for at least one hour to allow its bouquet to open fully. Serve at 16-18°C, ideally in large glasses, to capture the aromatic subtleties and silky palate. With a few more years in the cellar, it will continue to develop greater harmony and secondary notes, but it is already charming in its youth.
