Viniou Reviews

Château Suduiraut 2007 from the Sauternes region is a remarkable illustration of Bordeaux's legendary sweet white wines. Crafted predominantly from Sémillon, with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, this vintage benefits from the noble rot, botrytis cinerea, which concentrates the sugars and flavours in the grapes. The 2007 vintage was notable for its classical conditions: cooler at the onset, followed by a mild, damp season favouring noble rot development, leading to perfectly balanced grapes at harvest. The wine boasts a shimmering golden hue and a bouquet rich with aromas of candied apricot, honey, caramelised orange peel, and subtle toasted notes from careful ageing in French oak. The palate is luscious yet vibrant, interweaving opulent sweetness with refreshing acidity, carrying through to a long, elegant finish.

Sauternes itself, nestled in the southern reaches of Bordeaux’s Graves district, is renowned globally for its dessert wines. The area’s unique microclimate—thanks to the proximity of the Ciron and Garonne rivers—creates autumn morning mists followed by sunny afternoons, ideal for fostering noble rot that is essential to the region’s sought-after style. Soils here are mostly gravel and sandy clay, providing excellent drainage and contributing a subtle minerality to the wines. Château Suduiraut, one of the original 1855 Classified First Growths, is especially celebrated for its meticulous approach to viticulture and vinification, ensuring a wine of both finesse and complexity.

With its rich yet balanced character, Château Suduiraut 2007 pairs beautifully with a wide array of dishes. For a classic match, try it alongside foie gras, where the wine’s sweetness complements the richness of the liver. Blue cheeses such as Roquefort provide a sensational contrast, while fruit-based desserts like tarte Tatin or lightly spiced apple crumble will echo the wine’s own orchard fruit aromas. For something more unexpected, savour it with Asian cuisine—particularly dishes with ginger, honey or warmly spiced sauces.

For optimal tasting, serve this wine well-chilled, ideally between 10 and 12°C. Pour into medium-sized white wine glasses to concentrate the aromas, and allow a few minutes in the glass for the bouquet to unfurl. This 2007 Sauternes is approaching its maturity, combining vivid fruit with developing notes of honey and spice, but will continue to evolve gracefully over the next decade if carefully cellared.
