Viniou Reviews

Château Troplong Mondot 2016, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, stands as a benchmark for Right Bank Bordeaux. Crafted predominantly from Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine expresses the opulence and concentration typical of Troplong Mondot’s unique terroir. The 2016 vintage is widely celebrated for its balance and ageing potential, delivering a deep ruby colour with layers of dark fruit, hints of violets, truffle, and a lovely mineral undertone. The vinification emphasises gentle extraction and maturation in French oak barrels, providing refined tannins and complexity while retaining freshness and precision.

Saint-Émilion’s vineyards are nestled on the right bank of the Dordogne, where the combination of limestone, clay, and sand soils fosters vibrant yet plush wines. The region benefits from a relatively mild maritime climate, with warm summers and temperate winters, ideal for slow, even ripening. Saint-Émilion is steeped in history, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with viticulture dating back to Roman times. Troplong Mondot, situated on one of the highest points of the appellation, is particularly renowned for its rich, structured, age-worthy expressions.

For food pairings, this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru lends itself beautifully to robust dishes. Classic roast lamb with garlic and rosemary would be a superb match, as would beef Wellington or duck breast with a savoury cherry reduction. Traditional Southwest French fare such as confit de canard, entrecôte à la bordelaise, or a well-aged Comté cheese also highlight the wine’s depth and supple tannins.

To fully appreciate the aromatic complexity and texture, serve Chateau Troplong Mondot 2016 at 16-18°C. Decanting for two to three hours before serving is recommended, especially given the wine’s youth and structure, which will benefit from aeration. This vintage promises to evolve gracefully over the years, but if enjoyed now, offers a truly memorable Bordeaux experience.
