Château Haut-Brion 2018 from the prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation is one of the most celebrated red wines not only in Bordeaux, but in the world. Typically, the blend in Haut-Brion rouge is dominated by Merlot, with significant portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc, resulting in a wine of remarkable complexity and depth. The 2018 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season, which has amplified both power and concentration in the wine, while careful vinification and élevage in new French oak barrels bring refinement and structure. In its youth, the wine displays aromas of blackcurrant, plum, cassis, graphite, tobacco, and hints of cedar and truffle, with a palate marked by elegant tannins and a profound, lingering finish.
The Pessac-Léognan subregion in Graves is synonymous with both red and white wines of great finesse. The soils here are unique, combining gravelly terraces with clay, sand, and limestone, which provide excellent drainage and impart a distinctive mineral character to the wines. The climate is temperate and slightly warmer than other parts of Bordeaux, thanks to its proximity to the city and the influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean, allowing for optimal ripening conditions. Historically, Château Haut-Brion is notable as the only Graves property included in the original 1855 Bordeaux classification, underscoring its centuries-old reputation for excellence.
For food pairings, Haut-Brion 2018’s depth and structure call for dishes of equal stature. Traditional Bordeaux fare such as grilled lamb cutlets with rosemary, entrecôte à la bordelaise, or duck breast with a red wine sauce are classic matches. Its complexity also lends itself well to more refined dishes like roast veal with wild mushrooms or game birds such as pheasant. Mature cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda can also offer a harmonious pairing.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine at least two hours before serving to allow it to fully open up and reveal its aromatic layers. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C. This wine will continue to evolve and gain complexity with further cellaring, making it a superb candidate for long-term ageing.
