Château Haut-Brion 2016 from Pessac-Léognan stands as a true emblem of Bordeaux excellence. This red wine is typically a blend dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc lending both structure and aromatic complexity. The 2016 vintage is particularly celebrated for its balance, depth, and precision, thanks to an ideal growing season with ample sunshine and timely rainfall, resulting in grapes of outstanding ripeness and freshness. In the glass, it reveals a deep garnet hue, with an aromatic palate of blackcurrant, graphite, cedar, and hints of tobacco, all supported by a velvety tannic structure and a remarkably long, elegant finish. Ageing in new French oak barrels for around 18–22 months adds extra layers of finesse and complexity.
The Pessac-Léognan appellation lies just south of the city of Bordeaux, recognised both historically and in quality terms. This region is part of the larger Graves, its name coming from the gravel soils that define its terroir. The free-draining, mineral-rich gravels over a clay and limestone subsoil are particularly well-suited to both red and white varieties, contributing to wines with refined tannins and distinct minerality. The meso-climate benefits from both Atlantic moderation and forest shelter, which, paired with centuries of winemaking tradition, produces some of Bordeaux’s most distinguished wines. Château Haut-Brion itself is renowned as the oldest of Bordeaux’s first growths, with records dating back to the 16th century.
A wine of this calibre deserves to be paired with equally sophisticated dishes. Traditional Bordeaux cuisine such as entrecôte bordelaise (rib-eye steak in red wine and shallot sauce) or magret de canard (duck breast) will highlight the wine’s structure and depth. Slow-cooked lamb shoulder, truffle-infused dishes, or even roasted game birds like pigeon or quail are excellent companions, as are earthy mushroom-based preparations.
For the optimal experience, decant Château Haut-Brion 2016 for at least two hours to allow the wine’s aromas and texture to fully express themselves. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C; this range preserves both freshness and aromatic richness. This wine has impressive ageing potential, but is starting to show its pedigree beautifully even now.
