La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet 2017 is the second wine of the renowned Château Sociando-Mallet, based in the Haut-Médoc appellation of Bordeaux. Composed primarily of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this blend emphasises the freshness and elegance characteristic of the estate's wines. The 2017 vintage, marked by a cooler, challenging season with spring frosts, resulted in wines of moderate alcohol and lively acidity, offering immediate approachability while retaining the estate’s classic structure. The grapes come from gravelly soils mixed with clay, providing both drainage and nutrition, while traditional vinification and careful élevage in French oak contribute subtle layers of spice and texture.
Haut-Médoc, situated on the left bank of the Gironde, is famed for its exceptional terroir. The region benefits from a temperate maritime climate, which helps grapes mature gradually and preserves their freshness. The pebble-rich soils, a legacy of ancient riverbeds, are especially well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, while the clayier pockets provide body through Merlot. Over centuries, Haut-Médoc has developed a reputation for producing elegant, age-worthy reds with pronounced tannins, balanced fruit, and earthy minerality, with estates like Sociando-Mallet exemplifying the style.
For food pairing, La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet 2017’s supple tannins and red fruit notes make it an excellent match for roasted duck, braised lamb shoulder, or classic Médoc dishes such as entrecôte à la bordelaise. Mushroom risotto and grilled vegetables also complement the wine’s earthy undertones. Regional cheeses like Ossau-Iraty or aged Comté can provide a satisfying finish.
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and refined palate, serve this wine at 16-18°C. Decanting for around 45 minutes allows the subtle floral and spicy notes to emerge. Ideal for drinking now, it will also gain nuance over a few more years in the cellar.
