Château Coufran 2010, a cru bourgeois from the Haut-Médoc appellation in Bordeaux, is a classic representation of left-bank claret. Its unique identity stems from a predominantly Merlot-based blend, which distinguishes it from its Cabernet-heavy neighbours. The 2010 vintage was exceptional in Bordeaux, with a balanced growing season producing wines of great structure and longevity. The gravelly soils of the Haut-Médoc, combined with careful vinification—often involving traditional fermentation in temperature-controlled vats and ageing in French oak barrels—bring forth a wine that marries ripeness with elegance.
The Haut-Médoc, stretching north from the city of Bordeaux along the left bank of the Gironde estuary, benefits from a temperate maritime climate. Warm summers and mild winters, moderated by the river, allow grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The deep gravel soils, laced with clay and sand, ensure excellent drainage, encouraging vines to develop deep roots and concentrate flavours. The Médoc's long tradition of viticulture, dating back centuries, is reflected in the classic style of its wines, which are built for both early pleasure and cellaring.
Château Coufran 2010, with its ripe black fruit, plum and subtle spice notes, velvety tannins and fresh acidity, pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Classic pairings include roast lamb with rosemary or entrecôte à la bordelaise, bringing local harmony to the table. It complements game birds, such as duck breast with black cherry sauce, and hearty dishes like beef in red wine sauce or mushroom risotto. For a regional touch, try it with magret de canard or a classic Bordeaux-style cep mushroom tart.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine an hour before serving to soften its structure and fully express its aromatic complexity. Serve at 16-18°C. This temperature allows the wine's vibrant fruit and refined tannins to shine, offering a true taste of the Haut-Médoc's pedigree.
