Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine 2016 is the second wine of the prestigious Château Prieuré-Lichine in the Margaux appellation, nestled in the heart of the Médoc, Bordeaux. As is traditional in Margaux, this cuvée is crafted primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller proportions of Petit Verdot and sometimes Cabernet Franc, though the precise blend may vary with vintage. The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux was particularly favourable, with ideal weather conditions yielding wines of classic balance, depth and elegance. Vinification for Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine mirrors much of the care bestowed upon the grand vin, involving careful selection, gentle extraction and ageing in oak barrels, which contributes to its polished tannins and refined aromatic complexity.
Margaux lies on the left bank of the Gironde estuary and is renowned for producing some of the world’s most perfumed and graceful reds. The terroir here is characterised by deep, well-drained gravel soils over limestone and clay, which offer excellent conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, providing freshness and a distinctive floral nuance so typical of Margaux. The relatively temperate maritime climate shields the vines from excessive heat and drought, while gentle breezes protect against rot and disease. Margaux’s rich winemaking heritage is woven into each bottle, and its wines are celebrated for their complexity, aromatic finesse and ability to age gracefully.
For a wine of this suppleness and delicacy, recommended pairings include roast lamb with herbs, classic duck breast with a red fruit sauce, or a creamy mushroom risotto. Traditional dishes from the region such as entrecôte à la bordelaise also make a perfect match, as do aged cheeses like Comté or Saint-Nectaire, which bring out the wine's subtle earthy notes.
Serve this Margaux at a temperature between 16 and 18°C after opening it at least an hour in advance or decanting, allowing it to reveal its expressive bouquet of violets, blackcurrants, cedar and fine spices. This will also help smooth any youthful tannins, enhancing your appreciation of its elegant finish.
