Fugue de Nénin 2009 is the second wine of the esteemed Château Nénin, hailing from the celebrated right bank appellation of Pomerol in Bordeaux. The 2009 vintage is widely regarded as excellent in Bordeaux, marked by a warm, dry growing season yielding wines of opulence and generous fruit. While Pomerol wines are often Merlot-dominant, sometimes blended with a touch of Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon, the precise blend of this cuvée may vary. You can expect a deeply coloured, velvety red, offering plush black fruit, plum and damson aromas, nuanced with subtle spice, floral undertones, and, with age, hints of cocoa, tobacco and truffle. The vinification typically aims at expressing both the supple, fruit-forward character and the signature silky tannins of the appellation, supported by judicious oak ageing that lends further complexity.
Pomerol sits to the north-east of Libourne, on Bordeaux’s right bank. Though it is one of the region’s smaller appellations, its gravel, clay and iron-rich soils contribute to outstanding wine quality, particularly well-suited to Merlot, which thrives in the relatively cool, humid climate. With no official classification, reputation here is built on terroir and meticulous viticulture. Pomerol’s wines are famed for their elegance, rich texture, and capacity to age gracefully, and over the years, estates like Château Nénin have become highly regarded among aficionados.
Pairing Fugue de Nénin 2009 is a true pleasure. Its rounded structure, intense fruit and subtle savoury notes complement classics such as roast duck breast with cherries, beef Wellington, or lamb cutlets with rosemary. Traditional regional dishes like confit de canard or earthy lentil cassoulet work beautifully, as do mature hard cheeses or a simple rustic terrine with crusty bread.
Serve this wine at 16-18°C for optimal expression. Decanting one or two hours before tasting will help the bouquet fully unfold and soften any remaining tannic edge. Now approaching a beautiful maturity, Fugue de Nénin 2009 should offer great drinking pleasure, but will also continue to evolve gracefully over the next few years.
