Château Potensac 2017 from the Médoc appellation is a classic example of Bordeaux red wine, crafted predominantly from Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2017 vintage was shaped by a challenging spring frost, resulting in lower yields but enhanced concentration in the surviving grapes. The terroir at Potensac is unique within the Médoc, featuring gravelly soils interspersed with limestone and clay, which contribute to the wine’s structured tannins and refined minerality. Vinification is traditional, with careful extraction during fermentation and ageing in French oak barrels, imparting subtle spice and elegance to the finished wine. In the glass, the 2017 Potensac displays a deep ruby hue, offering aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, and a touch of violet, interlaced with cedar and graphite. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with impressive freshness, fine tannins, and a lingering, savoury finish.
The Médoc is synonymous with some of Bordeaux’s most celebrated vineyards, stretching along the left bank of the Gironde estuary. The maritime climate, tempered by the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, ensures moderate temperatures and helps the grapes achieve optimal ripeness. The gravelly soils are ideal for Cabernet varieties, facilitating excellent drainage and contributing to the structure and longevity of the wines. Historically, the Médoc has been at the heart of Bordeaux winemaking since the 17th century, renowned for its châteaux and a heritage steeped in tradition.
For food pairings, Château Potensac 2017 is ideally suited to classic French cuisine such as roast rack of lamb with herbs, duck breast with a berry reduction, or slow-cooked beef daube. For a regional touch, try it with entrecôte à la bordelaise or a selection of aged Aquitaine cheeses. The wine’s balance of acidity and structure also makes it a fine match for mushroom dishes or earthy lentil stews.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for 30–45 minutes to allow it to open up. Serve at a temperature of 16–18°C to reveal its full aromatic complexity and finesse. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for several more years if you prefer greater evolution and tertiary notes.
