Viniou Reviews

Domaine Albert Boxler’s 2016 Alsace Grand Cru is a splendid example of the region’s capacity for producing dry white wines of remarkable character. While the exact grape variety isn’t listed, Domaine Boxler is especially renowned for their Rieslings and Pinot Gris, both of which thrive on the steep, granitic slopes of Alsace’s acclaimed Grand Cru vineyards. The 2016 vintage benefits from a balanced growing season, which provided healthy grapes with excellent acidity and concentration. Fermentation typically takes place in traditional old oak foudres, followed by maturation on lees, allowing the wine to develop texture while preserving its inherent freshness and minerality.

Alsace itself is a singular wine region, nestled along France’s northeastern border with Germany, shielded by the Vosges mountains which create a particularly dry, sunny mesoclimate—one of the driest in France. The soils, especially in Grand Cru sites, are complex and diverse; granitic, marl, and limestone all play their part, lending nuance and structure to the finished wines. The region’s history has been shaped by both French and German influences, reflected not only in its grape varieties and language, but also in an approach to winemaking that prizes purity, terroir and longevity.

For food pairing, a Grand Cru Alsace white of this calibre is exceptionally versatile. If it’s Riesling, consider classic Alsatian pairings such as choucroute garnie or river fish with beurre blanc. For a Pinot Gris, try it alongside roast poultry, creamy mushroom dishes or veal in a white wine sauce. The wine’s precision and minerality also make it a wonderful accompaniment for sushi, sashimi or spicy Asian cuisine, as well as mature cheeses like Comté or Munster.

To best enjoy this wine, serve chilled but not overly cold to allow the aromatics and texture to shine. A serving temperature of 10-12°C is ideal. Decanting for thirty minutes will help open up its complex bouquet and reveal the full depth of its Grand Cru pedigree.
