E. Guigal’s “Brune et Blonde” Côte-Rôtie 2021 is a superb expression of the northern Rhône’s refined reds. Crafted from vineyards on both the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde slopes, this cuvée embodies the union of the more structured, robust elements traditionally associated with the Brune, and the elegance and finesse often attributed to the Blonde. The 2021 vintage in the region saw a cool year with challenges but offered lovely freshness and aromatic precision. Typically, these wines are predominantly Syrah, sometimes with a touch of Viognier co-fermented to enhance aromatics—though the actual blend can vary depending on the year and producer. Expect a nose of blackberry, violet, subtle spice, and hints of smoke. The palate tends towards a harmonious balance of supple dark fruit, lively acidity, and fine, lingering tannins, with an evocative lift from floral notes and gentle pepper.
The Côte-Rôtie appellation is among the Rhône Valley’s most prized northern regions, perched on steep, terraced slopes above the Rhône River. The climate here is continental, mitigated by river influence, allowing Syrah to ripen fully yet retain freshness. Soils vary between iron-rich schist in the Brune and lighter granite or gneiss in the Blonde, adding to the wine’s layered complexity. Côte-Rôtie’s history stretches back to Roman times, and today it continues to be celebrated for its deft interplay of power and elegance.
This style of wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, venison, duck breast or beef, as well as mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. For a regional touch, try it with daube de boeuf à la provençale or a well-seasoned saucisson sec. The fruit and savoury notes of the wine are further enhanced by dishes featuring rosemary, black olives or truffles.
For tasting, decanting for an hour or two in its youth can help the wine reveal its complexity. Serve at 16-18°C, allowing the aromas and structure to shine. This vintage can be enjoyed now but promises further rewards with a few years of careful cellaring.
