Auguste Clape’s 2010 Cornas is an exceptional expression of this storied northern Rhône appellation. Crafted from 100% Syrah, this wine offers a pure and powerful representation of the grape. The 2010 vintage stands out for its remarkable balance and structure, benefiting from a long, cool growing season that allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and develop complex aromas. The vines grow on steep granite slopes, which lend a distinct mineral character to the wine. Traditional winemaking methods are employed: hand-harvesting, full-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and ageing in old large foudres, which allows the vivid fruit and savoury notes of Syrah to shine without excessive oak influence.
Cornas is one of the northernmost and smallest appellations in the Rhône Valley, renowned for producing intense and age-worthy Syrah. The region’s continental climate features warm summers and cooler nights, promoting vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity in the wines. Granite-rich soils contribute finesse, freshness, and a signature touch of stone-driven minerality. Cornas, with a historical reputation for robust and rustic wines, has, in recent decades, found global acclaim for its focus on authenticity and terroir, with Auguste Clape often viewed as the benchmark producer.
With its deep colour and bouquet of blackberries, violets, smoked meat, cracked pepper, and olive tapenade, this Cornas calls for equally bold, flavourful dishes. It pairs superbly with roasted lamb or beef, game meats like venison, or slow-cooked stews such as boeuf bourguignon. Regional specialities such as civet de sanglier (wild boar stew) or lentils from Puy served with sausage also make for excellent companions, complementing the wine’s savoury depth and spicy undertones.
To fully appreciate the complexity and power of this 2010 Cornas, decant for at least two hours before serving to allow the aromatics to unfold gracefully. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C. This wine, while delightful now, will continue to evolve beautifully for another decade if cellared properly.
