Georges Vernay’s "Les Chaillées de L’Enfer" Condrieu 2016 represents one of the most refined expressions of the Northern Rhône’s iconic white wines. Hailing from the famed steep granite terraces of Condrieu, this wine is typically composed entirely of Viognier, though such details sometimes vary from year to year. In this cuvée, expect an alluring aromatic intensity; a medley of ripe stone fruit, fresh apricot, delicate blossom and hints of exotic spices. On the palate, there is usually remarkable silkiness and richness, balanced by remarkable freshness and minerality – a signature of both the house and the vineyard’s vertiginous, rocky slopes. Meticulous work in both vineyard and cellar, including careful hand-harvesting and gentle vinification, allows this wine’s natural generosity and complexity to shine through.
Condrieu is a legendary appellation in France’s Northern Rhône Valley, perched on dramatic, sun-scorched granite hillsides overlooking the river. The region’s climate is markedly continental – with warm, dry summers and crisp nights – conditions that help Viognier achieve optimal ripeness while retaining vital freshness. The soils, primarily composed of granite with patches of mica and decomposed rock, push the vines to dig deep, resulting in limited yields and wines of great character. Though Condrieu’s history dates back to Roman times, it was Georges Vernay who, in the 20th century, helped rescue Viognier from near extinction and cemented the area’s world-class reputation.
A wine of such aromatic richness and mouth-filling texture lends itself beautifully to delicate, subtly spiced cuisine. For a regional pairing, try it with quenelles de brochet (pike dumplings in a light sauce), or freshwater fish prepared with beurre blanc. Lobster, scallops, or lightly grilled langoustines also make wonderful partners. On the vegetarian side, asparagus risotto or goat’s cheese tartine will highlight the wine’s finesse. Delicate Asian-inspired dishes, such as steamed dim sum, can also bring out its fragrance.
To best appreciate the nuances of this Condrieu, serve it lightly chilled at around 10-12°C. Allowing the wine to open in the glass will reveal its full spectrum of aromas and flavours. This 2016 vintage is showing beautifully now but can evolve gracefully for several years.
