Domaine Louis Chèze’s 2019 Cuvée Brèze from Condrieu AOC is a superb expression of the Viognier grape, the singular variety allowed in this prestigious appellation. Grown exclusively on the steep granite slopes of the northern Rhône – in the Condrieu area – this wine is a product of meticulous vineyard management and careful vinification. The 2019 vintage, known for its warm, dry conditions, produced intensely aromatic and concentrated fruit. The wine was likely fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and neutral barrels to enhance its minerality whilst preserving the voluptuous, stone fruit-driven character so emblematic of Condrieu.

Condrieu lies in the heart of the Rhône septentrionale, a region with a continental climate marked by warm summers and often cold, mistral-swept winters. The vineyards here are perched on vertiginous terraces above the Rhône river, with well-drained granitic soils that bring out Viognier’s purity and aromatics. Condrieu's viticultural history dates back to Roman times, but the appellation almost disappeared in the 20th century before being revived by passionate local producers. Today, it stands as the world reference for Viognier, offering wines rich in perfume, texture, and grace.

Cuvée Brèze 2019 will dazzle with dishes that echo its exotic aromatics and lush mouthfeel. Seafood in creamy sauces, roasted lobster with saffron, or scallops sautéed with citrus are all excellent choices. Traditional Rhône pairings such as quenelles de brochet or chicken with morels in a cream sauce also allow the wine to express its full complexity. And for a vegetarian pairing, opt for a pumpkin risotto or roasted butternut squash with hazelnuts.

To serve, decant lightly if possible and pour at a temperature of 10-12°C. This range ensures optimal expression of Viognier’s hallmark apricot, peach, and violet notes whilst allowing the wine’s beautiful texture to shine.
