Viniou Reviews

Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes 2020 is a distinguished red wine from the celebrated Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the southern Rhône Valley. This cuvée is typically a blend dominated by Grenache, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and sometimes a hint of Cinsault—classic Rhône varietals that lend both depth and complexity. The 2020 vintage benefitted from a warm and fairly dry growing season, with enough freshness to preserve acidity, resulting in a wine that is both powerful and remarkably balanced. Vinification is traditional, often carried out in concrete vats and large oak casks to emphasise fruit purity and the signature garrigue character of the region, while still offering a supple tannic structure.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape sits at the heart of the southern Rhône, renowned for its unique terroir. The region is characterised by its galets roulés—large, rounded stones that store heat during the day and release it at night, fostering optimal grape ripening. The soils here are a complex mix of limestone, sand, and clay, which, combined with the intense Mediterranean sun and the invigorating Mistral winds, create ideal conditions for bold, age-worthy reds. Historically, this area was associated with the Avignon papacy, and winemaking traditions stretch back centuries, making it one of France’s great viticultural treasures.

Such a robust and aromatic wine pairs beautifully with rich, savoury dishes. Traditional Provençal fare such as roasted lamb with herbs, beef daube, or game birds in mushroom sauce are natural companions. Equally, it can stand up to hard cheeses like aged Comté or local goat cheese drizzled with olive oil. For a more regional touch, try it alongside a dish of ratatouille or wild boar stew, which will echo the herbal notes of the wine.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at a temperature of 16-18°C. Decanting for about an hour is recommended to allow the bouquet of black fruit, spice, and garrigue to fully express itself. This wine can be enjoyed now for its concentration and charm but will also reward several years of cellaring as the tannins soften and the flavours further harmonise.
