Château de Montmirail’s “Cuvée Les Deux Frères” 2022 Vacqueyras is a fine example of the southern Rhône’s signature red blends. This wine combines Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre – the region’s classic cépages – to deliver a deeply expressive and generous profile. In the glass, the 2022 vintage presents a vibrant ruby colour and opens with aromas of ripe blackberries, cherries in brandy, hints of garrigue, and subtle spices. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious balance with silky tannins, a rounded texture, and lingering notes of black pepper, liquorice, and fresh herbs, reflecting both sun and terroir. The wine is produced using traditional methods, including careful manual harvesting and attentive ageing, allowing the individual grape varieties to express their distinct qualities while blending seamlessly.
Vacqueyras lies in the heart of the southern Rhône Valley, just east of the Dentelles de Montmirail. This picturesque subregion benefits from a Mediterranean climate characterised by hot summers and the steady influence of the Mistral wind, ensuring healthy grapes and concentration of flavours. Soils here comprise a mix of clay-limestone and sandy terraces strewn with galets roulés (rounded pebbles), which help absorb and radiate warmth, aiding ripening while preserving freshness. The reputation of Vacqueyras has grown steadily; once annexed to the vast Côtes du Rhône, it was awarded its own appellation in 1990, now recognised for crafting robust, elegant reds with ageing potential.
Les Deux Frères pairs beautifully with hearty, savoury cuisine. Regional classics such as lamb shoulder roasted with herbes de Provence or daube de boeuf Provençale are excellent companions. The wine’s structure and spice also complement dishes like grilled duck breast, aubergine gratin, or wild mushroom ragout. Alternatively, mature cheeses, such as a rich tomme de Savoie or aged Comté, will enhance the wine’s complexity.
To best appreciate this Vacqueyras, serve it at 16-18°C, having opened it an hour in advance to allow full aromatic expression. While the wine is approachable in its youth, a few years of cellar ageing will further soften its tannins and highlight its layered character.
