Domaine Sérol’s Cuvée Oudan 2021 from the Côte-roannaise AOC is a captivating red wine coming from one of the Loire Valley’s lesser-known yet increasingly appreciated appellations. The wine is mainly crafted from Gamay Saint-Romain, an indigenous local clone of Gamay that thrives in the granitic soils of the Côte roannaise. This cuvée highlights the finesse and freshness that are the hallmarks of the region. Fermentation typically occurs with indigenous yeasts to express terroir authenticity, and maturation is often done in tanks or older barrels, preserving fruitiness and a lively, vibrant character. The 2021 vintage benefited from a cooler growing season, yielding wines of bright red fruit, crisp acidity and elegant tannic structure with pronounced notes of wild strawberry, cherry, and a hint of peppery spiciness on the finish.
The Côte-roannaise lies at the southernmost edge of the Loire Valley, tucked between the foothills of the Massif Central and the Allier River. Its granitic soils, reminiscent of neighbouring Beaujolais, provide excellent drainage and a mineral backbone to the wines. The temperate continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, allows grapes to ripen slowly, retaining freshness and aromatic lift. The region, though relatively small and historically overshadowed by the better-known Loire areas, has a long viticultural tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. In recent years, passionate vignerons like the Sérol family have revived its distinct identity.
This expressive Gamay is best enjoyed with dishes that complement its freshness and moderate tannins. Classic Loire pairings such as rillettes de porc or charcuterie will highlight its fruit and spice, while poultry dishes, grilled sausages or a roast chicken with herbs suit it perfectly. Regional cheeses like Saint-Nectaire or Cantal also make excellent companions.
To appreciate the full aromatic range and texture, serve Domaine Sérol Cuvée Oudan 2021 slightly cool, ideally at 14-16°C. This will bring out its vivid fruit and subtle mineral nuances, enhancing both solo sipping and gastronomic enjoyment.
