Viniou Reviews

Cyprien Peschard’s 2024 Sancerre is a classic expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the heartland of the Loire Valley. The 2024 vintage brings a youthful vibrance, showcasing the grape at its freshest. Expect a brilliantly pale straw colour with subtle green hues, reflecting its youth. On the nose, you will find an enticing bouquet of citrus fruits—think grapefruit and lemon zest—alongside crisp green apple, white peach, and the signature flinty minerality for which Sancerre is revered. The palate is lively yet precise, marked by racy acidity which gives the wine its signature freshness and a lingering, clean finish. No oak influence is expected here, allowing the purity of fruit and the terroir to shine through.

Sancerre, situated in the Centre Loire, is famed for its chalky Kimmeridgian limestone and flint soils that give the local Sauvignon Blanc its distinctive gunflint and mineral-driven character. The region enjoys a semi-continental climate, with bright summer days and cool nights ensuring grapes retain their natural acidity and aromatic intensity. Historically, Sancerre’s wines were prized even in the Middle Ages, celebrated both locally and abroad for their precision and elegance. The rolling hills and riverine influences further enhance the unique microclimate, enabling growers like Cyprien Peschard to craft wines of impressive finesse.

This Sancerre is a wonderfully versatile wine at the table. Its zesty, mineral backbone pairs beautifully with fresh goat’s cheese—particularly Crottin de Chavignol, a local delicacy—along with other classic Loire pairings like asparagus, smoked salmon, or delicately prepared shellfish. The citrus and herbal notes also make it a fine match for lighter Mediterranean dishes or sushi.

For the ideal tasting experience, serve this wine well-chilled, at around 8-10°C. This temperature preserves its aromatics and crisp structure. Pour into tulip-shaped white wine glasses and enjoy the immediate freshness; this wine is best appreciated within the first few years after bottling to capture its lively character.
