The 2022 Michel Delhommeau Cuvée Saint Vincent hails from the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation, located in the heart of the Nantais region of the Loire Valley. This classic Loire white is crafted from the Melon de Bourgogne grape, which is the hallmark varietal of Muscadet wines. The 2022 vintage benefited from mild spring conditions and a warm, dry summer, allowing for beautifully balanced, crisp, and aromatic wines. Michel Delhommeau’s approach combines respect for traditional vinification, including aging on lees (“sur lie”), which imparts extra complexity, finesse, and a subtle yeasty nuance to the finished wine. This adds an appealing textural dimension to the signature minerality and fresh citrus notes that are typical of Muscadet.
The Nantais region of the Loire Valley enjoys a temperate, maritime climate, owing to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. This results in moderate temperatures and ample rainfall, ideal for producing vibrant and fresh white wines. The soils are predominantly composed of gneiss, mica-schist, and granite, which contribute both to the mineral backbone and to the noted finesse of Muscadet. Historically, this region has long been associated with producing wines perfectly suited to accompanying local shellfish and seafood, thanks in part to its closeness to the Atlantic coast.
When considering food pairings, this Muscadet is a natural partner for a wide array of seafood dishes. The quintessential match is freshly shucked oysters, where the wine’s bracing acidity and saline touch complement the briny sweetness of the oysters. Other excellent pairings include steamed mussels, grilled sardines, and pan-seared scallops. For a taste of the region, serve it alongside moules marinières or a classic Loire fish terrine. Its crisp profile also allows it to pair well with sushi or lightly spiced Asian cuisine.
For optimal enjoyment, serve the 2022 Michel Delhommeau Cuvée Saint Vincent well-chilled, ideally at a temperature of 8-10°C. Enjoy it in its youth to take advantage of its vibrant freshness and lively aromatics, and savour its refreshing finish as an aperitif or with a meal.
