Plaïsance Penavayre’s Cuvée Négret Pounjut hails from the Fronton appellation in the heart of south-western France, a region known for its rustic, characterful reds. The 2024 vintage promises freshness and bright, youthful energy. While the blend for this particular cuvée isn’t always specified in detail, Fronton wines traditionally feature Négrette, a rare and distinctive local grape. Négrette is celebrated for imparting perfumed aromas, subtle spice, and a vibrant, juicy fruit profile, typically reminiscent of blackberry, violet, and gentle pepper notes. Winemaking in this estate is often respectful of the fruit, favouring fermentation techniques that aim to preserve aromatic intensity and the grapey, lively qualities typical of the area.
The Fronton region itself stretches along the banks of the river Tarn, northeast of Toulouse, benefiting from a mild, temperate climate shaped by Atlantic and continental influences. This helps the grapes achieve good ripeness while retaining acidity and freshness. The soils, predominantly made up of gravels and silty clay, encourage deep root growth and provide a suitable environment for Négrette to express its unique charm. Traditionally, Fronton has been appreciated for its wines since Roman times, and today, its producers skilfully blend tradition with modern approaches to highlight the local terroir.
Cuvée Négret Pounjut is an excellent companion to a wide variety of dishes, thanks to its medium body, supple tannins, and lively fruit. Its natural freshness makes it ideal with classic South-West cuisine, such as duck confit, cassoulet, or grilled Toulouse sausages. It would also sit comfortably alongside Mediterranean vegetable dishes, herbed lamb, or a simple charcuterie board featuring local cured meats.
To enjoy the wine at its best, serve it at around 16°C, which will help showcase its floral aromatics and supple texture. Opening the bottle half an hour beforehand allows the bouquet to develop fully and softens the palate, ensuring a pleasurable tasting experience whether paired with food or enjoyed on its own.
